Walking Football – Spain
This entry is part 6 of 5 in the series Howard Conder In Sports

This Euro News Weekly newspaper article featured Howard (Howie, known as Dasher) who they mentioned he was going back to the UK to enter the trials for the main England Walking Football Team where the outcome of those trials is mentioned in more detail in this website.

The WFA organised the South East Regional Walking Football trials which were held at Barnet FC grounds in North London on the 2nd of February 2019.

Only sixteen players were selected and although Howard scored two great goals, he was not selected to play for the Over 60’s team.  However, Howard impressed Richard Manning the South East Over 60’s Manager enough to be asked to be the player/manager of the newly introduced Over 70’s team for the South East of England which Howard handled for over two years. This six-minute video highlights Howard’s football skills. Howard said it was a great experience trialling for the Over 60’s despite there being ex-pro and ex semi-pro players whom he was competing against. He did feel that he was picked on more than the others as his little legs or strides often look like he was running but there were many others who were also running but hey that’s football.

All down to the Ref. Howard thinks he played well and contributed to the game. Howard has since decided that walking football is not for him as he still has too much energy and is going to continue to play ‘normal football’. Howard hopes to play walking football when he is older. Please do have a look at this video as it’s only 6 minutes long and it does give you some positive aspects to take on board if you’re thinking of playing Walking Football.
