Howard leaves Leighton Buzzard and the Barron Knights and seeks new employment in the big city of London. As daunting as it was for a sixteen-year-old, he nevertheless took the risk of finding his way around the big city, hoping to meet the right people with a more professional and friendly disposition.

Only recently was Howard re-introduced to Gary Leport who had a very successful record out in the early sixties entitled ‘Night of the Vampire’ which Gary recorded with the Moon Trekkers and was recorded and produced by Joe Meek at his studio in Holloway Road, North London.

Gary was only telling Howard recently about some of the past that Howard had forgotten about and that was when a certain singer, the now world-famous Rod Stewart was having tea at Howard’s apartment in Ridge Road where Rod had apparently been cutting his fingernails and letting them drop onto the carpet and Howard’s mother had said to both her son and to Gary “do not bring that Rod back here again”.  😀
Gary also recalled how Rod Stewart had been the singer for his newly formed band way back in 1964 and according to Gary, Howard was their drummer for a short time whilst he was looking for a professional job.

Howard was introduced to Joe Meek as drummer looking for work as a session player and after a few recording sessions at Joe Meek’s studios, including one session where the now-legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple fame was also recording music whilst Howard was playing the drums, and it was after this session that Joe Meek told Howard to get himself over asap to audition for Joe Brown who urgently needed a drummer as his drummer and his bass player had just walked out on him and that was whilst Joe Brown was contracted to a winter season performing on stage for the pantomime Aladdin. As you can see from the photos, Howard got the job.

Howard played the drums for Joe Brown’s Bruvvers for around the next eighteen months right up until Joe Brown decided to stop gigging and just wanted to focus more on appearing on stage when in 1965 Joe performed alongside Anna Neagle in Charlie Girl at the West End in the Adelphi Theatre.

During his time with Joe Brown, Howard performed at the world-famous Albert Hall, also the NME Poll Winners Concert 1964 at Wembley where the world-famous singer Roy Orbison handed them their Award for the ‘Top Personality of the Year 1964’.
When you think that there were so many Top Ten World Famous acts to choose from that year, it was an amazing achievement to win an award.

The 1964 NME Poll Winners Concert at Wembley where all the legends of that period performed on the same stage in one day. Truly a day to remember!!

Amongst the 1964 NME Poll Winners at this event included The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, Manfred Mann, Cliff Richards, Dusty Springfield, The Animals, Billy J Cramer, The Searchers, Jerry and the Pacemakers, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Kathy Kirby, and a special message from Elvis Presley.

What an amazing experience and privilege Howard had to be amongst some of the greatest performers in the music business ever. WOW!

Watch below a short video excerpt where Joe Brown and The Bruvvers performed, Howard played the drums.

Apart from touring with other well-known music artists such as Manfred Man, Johnny Kid and the Pirates and numerous other American artists. Joe Brown and The Bruvvers appeared on many Saturday night prime time television shows during the period Howard was with Joe Brown. Shows such as Morecambe & Wise, Frankie Howard, Tommy Cooper and Arthur Haynes, also Blue Peter and not to forget music shows like Top of the Pops and Ready Steady Go.

Howard said that working with Joe Brown was such a wonderful experience especially compared to his horrendous experience previously with the Barron Knights …. adding that although Joe was a hard taskmaster, he was always kind and treated everyone in the band with the utmost integrity, and professionalism.

In fact, looking back over his whole music career, Howard said that out of all the people he worked with, Joe Brown was the nicest person EVER! Also, ALL RESPECT to his then-wife Vicky and daughter Sam Brown who were also lovely to know and work with.
Howard recalls when Joe and the Bruvvers were recording in a studio in London, they needed a harmonica player and after the session had finished this harmonica player said he had just made a record and he was hopeful that it was going to be a hit. The title of the song was ‘It’s Not Unusual’ and yes it was the now the Legend Tom Jones!  Everyone had to start somewhere with their career and breaking into the Music Business is no easy task.
