This entry is part 9 of 23 in the series Howard Conder's Life Stories

Towards the end of Howard’s time at NEMS Enterprises, he came across a singer-songwriter called Rod Lynton whom he helped to re-arrange some of Rod’s songs and eventually formed Ruperts People who consisted of various would-be musicians looking for a break and eventually Howard managed to include the right musicians to produce a record which Howard got a deal with EMI Records.

The A-side was called ‘Reflections of Charles Brown’ which got into the top 40 UK charts and Number 13 in the Australian charts. In the USA it climbed to #15 in Orlando, Florida, but that was all in the USA. In Canada, the song had success in Vancouver where it climbed to #7 on CKLG. Meanwhile, this track Reflections of Charles Brown has become a collector’s favourite until this very day.

Howard recently updated the end section of this record by adding more musical instruments but made sure he kept his favourite guitar solo of all time with its haunting tone and licks by Bryn Haworth… Howard named this one-minute video “Reflections of Ukraine” in dedication to those who have suffered tremendous loss of homes, businesses, and lives at the hands of Russian invaders.

On stage in concert, Rupert’s People were comprised of members of The Sweet Feeling and described at the time as electrifying by people writing about concerts they gave in Hastings, London and elsewhere. “Reflections Of Charles Brown” was heavily reminiscent of Procul Harem’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” a song that went on to sell over ten million records in 1967.

In 1997 a dear couple who were watching Howard’s programmes on Identity Television, a subsidiary of BET (Black Entertainment Television) insisted Howard put his testimony onto videotape. Anyway, a long story made short. Even though the filming took place around 1996/7, Howard did nothing with it for about four years.
